How to Play Drift Boss
One button, two directions, an endless road. This page covers everything you need for a first good run.
The goal
Stay on the road for as long as you can. Your score is distance. There are no levels and no finish line, and one fall ends the run. That is the entire rulebook, which is why you can learn it in a minute and still be improving a month later.
The controls
The road only runs in two directions on screen, up-right and up-left. At each corner it turns 90 degrees from one to the other. So one input is enough.
| Device | Hold | Release |
|---|---|---|
| Mouse | Left button anywhere on the game: drift right | Drift left |
| Keyboard | Space: drift right | Drift left |
| Touch screen | Touch anywhere on the game: drift right | Drift left |
The official MarketJS demo's tutorial says "hold spacebar or click to make the car go right", and releasing sends it the other way. Think of it as a habit: when the road bends right, start holding. When it bends left, let go. On a computer, click the game once so the page knows to send your keys to it. On a phone you do not need to hit the car or any button, any touch on the game area counts.
How the drift works
The moment you press or release, the car points the new way. It does not go that way instantly though. It keeps sliding along the old direction for a short moment, and you see tire smoke while it does. That slide is the drift, and it is the whole skill of the game.
The practical result: if you wait until the car is on the corner tile, it will slide past the turn and drop off the outside. Press a little early and it swings around and lines up with the next straight. Too early, and it cuts the corner and falls on the inside. You find the sweet spot by feel, usually within five or six runs.
Straights, bumps and ramps
Early in a run the straights are long enough to relax on. Later they shrink, and corners come one or two tiles apart. Some versions add bumps and short ramps later in a run. If the car leaves the road for a moment, plan your next input before it lands, not after.
Coins, cars and boosters
Coins sit along the road. In the game they go toward boosters you can choose before a run, and the official listing mentions unlockable vehicles. We cover it in cars and boosters.
Your first five minutes
- Click the game, press Play, then Start Drift.
- Do not chase coins in your first three runs. Just learn the timing.
- Say "press" or "release" out loud as you see each corner. It sounds silly and it works.
- After each fall, note which corner got you. It is almost always a short pair.
- Once you pass a hundred or so, read the tips.
